5 Key Pieces for Spring Series: The Flippy Skirt

Today is the last post in this series and we are going to talk about that little black skirt up there in the picture.  "The industry" is calling that a flippy skirt, but in my day, it was called the skater skirt.  So, flippy skirt...skater skirt...whatever....it's a short skirt that isn't for the faint of heart.

You're not going to catch me in a skirt that short unless it's cold enough for me to wear leggings or tights under it.  Why?  Because I am a total clutz and if I happened to be wearing one (without tights or leggings) at the time of one of my "incidents" I would probably flash unsuspecting souls and ruin them forever. So, these skirts are basically like the harem pants we talked about a couple of weeks ago.

And here's how I found some of them styled via Pinterest

That's all for me this week!  The Hubbs and I will be celebrating our anniversary this weekend so if you wanna see what we are up to, follow me on Instagram!  Have a great weekend and I will see you all on Monday!

5 Key Pieces for Spring: White Jacket

Alright, so we've talked about denim jackets, striped dresses, and harem pants. That leaves just two items left in this series: the classic white jacket/blazer and the (weirdly) named flippy skirt.  Because I am in the market for a couple of blazers, I thought that I could just combine all my browsing into useful information to share with all of you.

So, we know that black blazers were all the rage in the fall/winter.  Well, now you need a white one to go with that black one.  Here's what I have found lately:

h&m || forever 21 || target

I am leaning more towards the Forever 21 blazer.  I like the cut because it will still look okay on my short-torso'd body and I've always been a fan of two-button blazers.  I also like the faux pockets.  I think that adds a bit of character to a plain piece such as this.

I always like to go to Pinterest and hunt down style ideas on the pieces I talk about.  It is easier for me to see how something is styled and then put my own spin on it, than to just think of something from scratch.  Very rarely do I come up with an outfit off the top of my head.  I'm usually always inspired by something I have seen and then I take it and run with it.  I believe that is the beauty in finding our own style: to be so inspired by something that we wish to recreate it in a way that suits ourselves as an individual.

Okay, so, you know I'm going to show you what I've been pinning, right?

This wraps up my posts for the week since I will be out of town for a wedding!  Please be sure to follow me on Instagram (@lifenleopard) to see a sneak peak of what I wore to the wedding, how we entertained ourselves, and how well L fairs on a six hour road trip.   Then, come back here Monday to hear ALL about it!

Have a great rest of the week and a fabulous weekend!

5 Key Pieces for Spring: Harem Pants

I am finally getting around to writing this post!  This week has been horrible!  It started out with me having a sore throat on Sunday morning and progressively getting worse until Wednesday morning when I could breathe through my nose again.  Then, L got sick.  She woke up Wednesday morning with that horrible barking cough that usually means croup.  This time, though, it's an upper respiratory infection.  She seems to be on the mend and now The Hubbs is feeling puny!  Lord help this mama!

So, anyway, here I am to write this post for you all and then I will go back to swigging Robitussin every four hours for this horrendous cough and spraying Lysol over every surface of my house.  The cat's are going to be pissed.

Today's key piece is something that you probably won't see me in.  I'm just not one for pants unless they are wide-legged, black, dress pants.  Seriously.  I call those my "teacher pants."  Express used to make an Editor pant (anyone else remember that?) that I just adored.  I wore them all the time when I taught.  They were so comfortable.  Anyway, I digress...(It's the Robitussin...)

The key piece that InStyle says is one to have in your closet for Spring is the Harem Pant.  Yes, yes....the Harem. Pant.

Lemme just show you....

choice 1 || choice 2
They don't look bad, I just don't think they would do much for me and my curves. The tapered legs turn me off big time.  However, as I was searching around for harem pants, I did find that they can be styled casually, dressed up for work, and dressed up more for evening.  So, they are a pretty versatile pant and would be a great closet staple, if you can pull them off.

I took the liberty of pinning several ideas to my Fashion: Style Ideas board on Pinterest for you guys to look through.  You will find a lot of stuff on there!  If you like what you see, well then just, follow me! :)

That's all for today!  If you haven't liked the new Facebook page yet, you need to do that now!  The widget on the right hand side of the blog has been updated or you can just click here and then click "LIKE"!  Thanks guys!  Have a great weekend and see you next week!  Oh, and remember!  If you like what you see, please share it with your friends!  Share, tweet, and pin to your hearts content! :)

5 Key Pieces for Spring Series: Striped Dress

Last week I started this short series in hopes to give my readers a more budget-friendly approach to looking stylish.  I know how I feel when I see something I like in a magazine, only to be completely disappointed by the price tag.  I have always searched out budget pieces, but to those who may have to cut back a little bit or are starting over again wardrobe wise (like me)-this is definitely a series that is for you.

Last week, we talked about denim jackets  and today we are going to talk about something that is most certainly a many seasons piece.  You can't go wrong owning this one.  Dressed up or dressed down, it's the perfect closet staple in general and it just so happens to be hot for the spring time too!  Bonus!

I happen to have a striped dress in my closet.  I bought it last summer on a whim and it hid in my closet all fall and winter.  I pulled it out when I was doing my closet purge and realized I knew how to wear this dress now and I shouldn't hide it.

Here's a couple of outfit inspirations around the striped dress:

The Red Lady

The Monday Blues

I also just had the crazy idea that you could probably wear a denim jacket with a striped dress and throw on a pair of Chuck's in a fun color with accessories to match.  Ooo, my wheels are turning now!

Tip: I used to freak out about stripes, but then I discovered that different kinds of stripes look
different on everyone.  So, I started trying to find what kind of stripe works best for my body shape and I discovered that once I found the right kind,  I loved stripes!  My body shape is slightly curvy (ya'll...I got hips...) so a small to medium black stripe works best for me.  I'm short (5'1") so a vertical stripe works best.  Don't be afraid to try on 15 striped dresses until you find one that makes you go, "Alright....this is not so bad..."

As a side note before I sign off, I am hoping to start doing more outfit posts now that the weather is starting to break a bit.  I have purchases and new outfits I need to show you guys! So, be on the lookout for those!

Next week, we are going to see a piece that may not be for everyone, but that could be fun on the right person.  I am not totally sure how I feel about this piece, but I'm going to do a little research and see what I can come up with. :)  Until next time!

Mint for Spring

Happy Monday and a happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!  I thought since today was all about green anyway, I thought I may show you that you can wear green even after St. Patty's Day is over!  Yep, that's right, mint is a big color for Spring this year.  I do love the occasional pastel in my wardrobe and this color just happens to be one of my "go-to pastels".

I found a lot of pretty things when I was doing my research and I think I may have to purchase the pretty lace button up.  I don't know-we shall have to see.

I know I have been really sporadic with posting lately, and when there is one, they are a bit different than what you are used to seeing.  There is so much behind the scenes work going on right now.  You guys would flip if you saw my blog planner and my to-do lists.  The new layout for this space is still being created, I'm trying to set up the other blog for my personal writing, and a lot of other little things that need to be done for the re-brand to take place.  That's just in the blog world.  In my real life, we have been going to birthday parties, gearing up for a six hour car ride with a toddler at the beginning of April, and potty training.  I'm just swamped.

I will be back tomorrow for my monthly Literary Junkies post (which I am actually co-hosting this month!) and I have two other posts planned for this week.  It's going to be a full week of blogging here, so please be sure to check in!  I'm getting really frustrated with Facebook as of late-no one is seeing my posts.  I have tried everything!  I don't know what else to do! So, if you are following me on Facebook, you may want to follow me on Twitter or Google+ too so you don't miss anything. You can also subscribe by email at the very top of the blog on the right hand side, above my picture.  Just enter your email address and you should get an email every time I publish a new post.

Okay, I think that is all for today.  I will see you all tomorrow and thank you for being so patient and supportive.  I love ya for it!

5 Key Pieces for Spring Series: Denim Jacket

A couple of weeks ago, I sat down one evening to flip through my March 2014 InStyle and I found a really cool article on the five key pieces you should have in your wardrobe for Spring.  I was really excited about some of the pieces-until I saw the price tag on them.  (Who spends $400 on a denim jacket?)  I said, "Oh no, I can create these looks for way less than that!"

And this series was born.

Over the next five weeks, I'll be showing you five key pieces for your Spring wardrobe, a couple of outfit inspirations, and some budget versions of the key piece.  Sound good?  Great!  Let's get started with this weeks key piece!

I actually happen to have this key piece in my closet and I am so glad I do!  I have worn it in this post here and am really excited to wear it this Spring.  A denim jacket works great for me because I am usually chilly wherever I go.  Fashionable and warm!?  Sign me up!

Here's a couple of different ways you can wear a denim jacket and I am definitely going to be trying these two looks out!
Casual Leopard

Turquoise Dream

I'm pretty excited about the rest of the key pieces.  Next week is a really versatile piece that could be worn for more seasons than just Spring.  See ya next week!

Sara's Spring Faves

I decided to do something a bit different today since I have been thinking a lot about my Spring wardrobe.  I am basically starting from scratch, so I have been pouring over countless spring looks for the past couple of weeks.  I have had several things catch my eye and I am actually excited to shop for Spring!

When I think of Spring, I think of bright and cheery colors, so that is what I stick with, despite what the fashion gurus may say.  I am a firm believer in wearing what you love, not what a fashion mag is dictating.

I'm also a firm believer in not spending a fortune on your wardrobe.  We are a one income family with a two and a half year old-we can't afford to go out and shop at designer locations and pay full price.  It just can't happen.  This is why I shop at TJ Maxx, Marshall's,Target, Kohls, Old Navy (not their jeans), and the occasional Wal-Mart purchase makes its way in there from time to time.  Do I love looking at things from the Gap, Loft, The Limited, and J. Crew? Oh, you bet I do!  However, I have a hard time paying their prices, so I am always trying to find similar items at a cheaper price.  I've also been known to stalk items until they get cheap enough for my wallet.  Ha!

Anyway, now that I have rambled on long enough (oops!), how would you like to see my Spring faves?

Sara's Spring Faves:

You may notice there are no shoes or accessories mixed in.  That's because I found a ton and that will have to be a separate post, so watch for that.  Seriously, have you all seen the spring accessories they are coming out with?  Wow!

I love all of these pieces.  Comfortable, colorful, and some of them can even be mixed and matched to make other outfits.  I'm thinking that rose colored skirt, a white tee, and that denim jacket with some cowboy boots could be a fun outfit, what do you all think?

What's on your Spring wardrobe list?

Spring/Summer DIY Wreath Tutorial

The weather is warming up and people in our neighborhood are out planting flowers, bringing out the patio furniture, and hanging their door wreaths on their doors to welcome visitors.  I have seen many kinds the past couple of weeks and decided to try my hand at making my own.

This is the first wreath I have ever made, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it turned out.  It isn't crazy fancy, but it is perfect to welcome the warm weather with.

Supplies:

  • a natural grapevine wreath
  • flowers of your choosing
  • a wooden letter
  • 5 1/2 inch squared edge burlap ribbon OR a pre-made burlap bow
  • glue gun and extra sticks
  • scissors
  • paint (for your letter, if you wish)
  • pain brush/sponge if painting

Step One:

The first thing you want to do is paint your letter if you aren't going to leave it looking natural.  You could paint the letter any color you wanted, I just thought the white looked better with the wreath and the flowers I chose.  I only needed one coat of paint on either side and it dried while I was putting the rest of the wreath together.

Step Two:

After you have painted, set the letter off to the side and out of the way to dry.  Take the wreath and give it a a good look.  Is it shaped right?  Do some twigs need to be trimmed back and smoothed out?  Go ahead and re-shape and trim your wreath to your desired look.  I used a pair of kitchen scissors to get the job done and just cut off all the scraggly vines and made it look like a perfect (but not too perfect) circle.

Step Three:

Now you are ready to tackle the placement of your flowers.  I just placed them where I thought they would look best and going off of all the visuals I had seen around our neighborhood and good 'ole Pinterest!

***Plug that glue gun in right now and get it ready to go***

The first thing you want to do is to remove the stems on the flowers, but leave enough to poke through the wreath at least halfway.  This will help to place the flowers on the wreath here in a little bit.  Once you have the stems cut off, play with the positioning of your flowers to find the look you are going for.

Once you have the flowers placed where you want them, one at a time, glue them in place on the wreath.  Place a good amount (not dripping, obviously) of glue around the base of the flower (underneath the petals) and then press the flower stem through the vines on the wreath until the glue on the back of the flower meets the wreath.

Continue to do the glue/place method until you have succeeded in the look you want.

***Leave the glue gun on, you will need it for the next part***

Okay, so, by now you should have your letter drying, your wreath trimmed up, and flowers glued in place. You are now ready for THE BOW!

Step Four:

The bow was the toughest part for me.  I seriously played with burlap ribbon for a half an hour before I finally figured out how to get the ribbon to look like a bow without actually tying the ribbon itself into a bow.  It was painful.  Suffice it to say, if you know how to tie a bow, GREAT!  Go get you some burlap ribbon and go to town!  If you do not know how to make a bow for a wreath, spend the extra money and buy a pre-made bow.  You will thank me. :)

Step Five:

The final step is to affix your letter to your wreath.  I used some of the burlap ribbon that was fraying on the ends to attach my letter to the wreath itself.  I thought it gave it a very rustic look, which is what I was going for. You can see how I affixed the letter to the wreath in the picture below.

And now you're finished!  Go on over and display that wreath proudly on your front door!

If you love this tutorial of mine, please feel free to pin, tweet, or share to your hearts content!

Announcing The Month of 30: From Child to Mother

Hello readers!  If you have been paying attention to Facebook the past day or so, you know that I am supposed to be announcing something BIG today. If you have no idea what is going on, click here to join our community so you can stay up-to-date on all the happening's with the blog.  It will be worth it!

So, without further adieu, I would like to announce a new series on the blog for the month of April!

Here's the deal:  I am turning 30 on April 18th. Yep, that's right.  30.  I am going to embrace it.  I am not "29 and holding" nor will I stop telling people my age nor will I run out to the nearest teenager store and start cramming my post child body into skinny jeans that I can't even get over my butt.  I will be 30.  It's a milestone.  It's important.  It means I have thirty years of life under my belt and damn it, some of those were some rough years.  It's time to celebrate them, embrace them, and live my next thirty years out loud!

I wanted to share with all of you where I have been, what I have accomplished, and what I have learned on my adventure to 30.  I want to erase the stigma of 30.  I have discovered that, especially in women, 30 causes them to freak out.  It's a number, girls.  It really is.  That's it.  When you turn thirty, it means you have survived thirty years of what life has thrown at you.  Pat yourself on the back, embrace it, celebrate it ; don't run and hide.

Starting April 1st, my readers are going to start seeing me peel away layers of myself and displaying them on the blog, for all the world to see.  Don't get me wrong, I am a little nervous, but I am excited at the same time.  I am going to talk about things that I keep close to my chest because I want to revel in what I have accomplished, what I have learned, and enter 30 to learn new things, face new things, and live my life.

Here is the breakdown for the next month:

In addition to my lists, (which will be chock full of things that some may not even know or realize about me) there will be posts and photos chronicling my last thirty years.  I am also going to talk about my dreams for the future and the husband and I's one year wedding anniversary on April 14th.

If you really want to know the person behind this blog, pay attention to Facebook as I will be announcing new posts to the blog, photos from the past, and giving you all kinds of information to make you say, "So that's why she is the way she is!" HA!

Mark your calendar's for April 1st, set an alarm on your phone, write it on a Post-It Note and stick it on your fridge; whatever you have to do to remember to come here every week and read, do it!  It is going to be something spectacular, I assure you!

I am very excited for our journey to start!  Have a great Thursday everyone!

Until next time,

Chocolate Pudding Fixes Everything

Well folks, here it is!  It's Friday!  We have (almost) made it through another week!

I had every intention of posting yesterday, but then decided not to.  Eric actually took his day off yesterday, so we had family day and hung out around here.  It was nice and much needed.  I didn't do anything in the way of housework so I am catching up on all of it today before our crazy, busy weekend starts.

L and I kicked off the weekend with having her Spring picture's taken today.  She has the cutest Easter dress, little white shoes, and an adorable hat (that she picked out herself).  So, we got dressed up this morning and made our way to the nearest portrait studio to welcome Spring.

And then all hell broke loose.

L did not want her picture's taken today.  At all.  Not one bit.  It didn't matter how goofy the photographer and I acted, she just wanted to cry, scream, clutch Ellie (her lovey), and look at me as if to say, "Why do you make me do these things you horrible woman!?"

(Oh because, dear child, when I gave birth to you, they made me sign a contract at the hospital stating and promising that I would always make you do things you hated.)  <----That's sarcasm in case some of you don't know me in real life. :)

So, we got one good pose, which is totally enough for me.  I just hated putting her through all of that for one picture. I'm sure it won't be the last time she freaks out on me in a portrait studio.

She was mad at me the whole ride home.  Wouldn't smile at me, wouldn't answer my questions with her new found head nod's; she just stared out the window, clutching Ellie.  I cracked the sunroof thinking she would like the wind blowing through her hair...nothing.

Nice.

My 20 month old is brooding like a teenager.

*sigh*
So, you know what I did to get into her good grace's again?

I fed my child chocolate pudding with her lunch.

I let her get super, duper messy.  I let her wipe her hands through her hair, all over her face, the table, the chair...everywhere.

I just let her go.

For anyone that knows me, knows that I have let go a lot since she was born.  I was a clean freak before she was born.  Bad.  Everything in it's place, turned the right way, etc.  Bad.  I drove people crazy.  I know I did.

I just ate my own lunch and let her go.

She was having a blast.

She needed to feel like a 20 month old again and in control of her own existence.

L is a lot like me.

When I feel like something is out of my control or I am being made to do things that I don't want to do (and, yes, even at almost 30, this still happens) I get mad.  I brood.  I may even cry.

The only thing that makes me feel better is by doing something I want to do, to take back control of my existence.

My daughter just needed the same thing.

I would never deny her that.  Ever.  Within reason.

What about you?

Do you feel like your life, or a part of it, is out of control?  Do you feel like you are dictated by some one or some thing?

If you do, go do something for you this weekend.  Whatever makes you feel your best, whatever makes you happy, go do it.  Stop living in the cycle, stop living under people's thumbs, stop living for other people.

Live for you.

And hey, if it's chocolate pudding that will make you feel better, L can attest that it works. :)

Have a great weekend all!

Until next time,

The A to Z of Now

Last week, Shawn from Awesomely Awake posted an A to Z Now list and when I read it, I thought it was a pretty good idea.  She borrowed the idea and then encouraged all of her reader's to make their own list.  I think it is a good way to center ourselves in our busy, day-to-day lives.  So, without further adieu, here is my  A to Z Now list:

April. Next month is going to be a lovely, exciting month on the blog and in our home.  I am really looking forward to all that next month holds.

Balancing. Even though I am a SAHM, there is a lot to do in a day around here.  One child, three cat's, a husband, and me.  It can get a little crazy sometimes.  I am really trying to work on balancing everything in this house with my own needs.  It is a struggle, but I am getting there.

Coloring. L has found a new love for coloring and that makes this Mommy's heart super happy.

Diet. I am holding on very tightly to my "No snacking at night" rule.  I have failed a few times, but I keep trying!

Energy.  I have felt so depleted lately.

February.  Thank goodness that month is over.  That was a trying month with all the sickness that went through this house.

Grace. I am learning how to express it and be a pillar of it.  Grace is hard sometimes.

Hair.  I miss my long hair.  I wish it would hurry up and grow back.

Inspired. This was also what Shawn had listed on her list.  However, I am started to feel more inspired daily now that I am writing more.  I have started to really see things again, which is always lovely.

Junk.  Our garage is ridiculous, seriously.  It needs an overhaul.  Soon.

Keys.  Okay, so, we have a car that doesn't require the key be placed in the ignition to start the car.  The key just has to be present in the vehicle.  I know this.  I have known this for months.  I do it all the time.  Except for today, when I had a frantic search in my pockets for the car keys to start the car.  (As in, put the key in the ignition and start the car.) I was freaking out thinking I was going to have to take L back out of the car, go back into Target, report lost keys, and then call my husband to come get L and her dumb Mom for loosing the keys to the car.  Until I saw the ignition button and those nice words, "Push to Start."  *sigh*  Thank you, Nissan.  How many heart attacks have you given people this year?

Losing it.  Yup, Mommy loses her mind daily.  It's okay.  We just go on about our business like nothing ever happened.

March.  I love March.  It is the start of a new season, new growth, new projects, new fashion, new....everything.  I love March.

No.  I am learning to say this more.  I am also dealing with L doing it.  She has mastered the head nod and the head shake, ladies and gentlemen.  It's all downhill from here. LOL!

Optometrist.  Mommy needs an eye exam and new glasses.

Peace.  Yea, stole this one too, but we all need peace.  Peace within, peace from the outside world, peace at night when the baby is sleeping.....Peace.  Good word.  Good idea.

Quiet.  It is true what they say:  If your toddler is quiet, you better go check on them.  You may find a whole box of wipes in the toilet like I did! Or, hey, you may even find a stuffed Simon from The Chipmunks head first in the toilet with the lid closed like Daddy did!

Restore.  Restore myself, restore order in our home.

Silly.  L is silly.  She encourages Mommy and Daddy to be silly, too.  Everyone wins!  We all need to be silly once in a while, don't you agree?

Tea.  I love my herbal tea.  Oh, how I love it.

Up.  I think one day, when the weather is warmer, L and I are going to go outside in the backyard, lay on a blanket, and look at the sky.  It has been a long time since I have viewed the world from the ground.

View.  I need to pick up a camera again and start changing my view of the world.

Writing.  I love that I am doing this more.  I am feeling myself start to center again after taking a really long hiatus.  I missed writing.  I missed being able to understand what I am thinking through my writing.  I have a disconnect between my thoughts and my mouth sometimes.  It is better for me to write them down.  Always has been, always will be.

Xylophone.  L has a toy one that she bangs on a lot during the day.  She get's very excited that it makes noise.  She also loves her drum. LOL!

Year.  The husband and I will have been married for a year next month!

Zoo. I can't wait to take L to the zoo soon! It will be her first trip!

And there you have it!  I encourage you all to write your own list, too.  I feel better after doing this.  It helps me to be present in the here and now and not think about all the other things that need to be done around here.

Until next time,
