Happy Birthday, L!

Ya'll!  My little girl is THREE today! Ugh.  It's all gone by so fast!

We had her three year pics taken (yes, I'm that mom) this past week, and I am in awe!  I got the CD from our photographer yesterday and I just had to share some of them with you!

Maybe I'll write a thoughtful post one day about L turning three, but not today.  Today I want to celebrate her turning 3!  I have planned to take her shopping to spend some of her birthday money, get her some cupcakes (her fave), take her swimming, and then let the evening carry us after that.

Because she's only three once.

Saying Goodbye: A Lesson in Self-Worth

At the beginning of this year, I decided that one of my goals for 2014 was to feel better.  I wanted to have more energy, a better frame of mind, and I wanted to feel good in my own skin.  I didn't realize what I was unlocking within myself when I set that goal.  This goal of mine has actually opened my eyes to a lot of things and has helped me to start undoing some of the things that I believed to be true.

I have a little story...

Saturday I was kid-free, and after I did my grocery shopping and the unloading, I decided I would head out to a couple of stores to see if I could find a pair of jeans for myself.  If you have been a reader for very long, you know about my struggles with jeans.  I wasn't exactly looking forward to this, but the one pair of jeans I already owned had gotten too big, and I like having at least one or two pair in my wardrobe.

Kohl's didn't have crap, so I went to Target.  I stood looking at the jean wall and decided to grab a pair of 12s (my current size) and a pair of 10s (a size I hadn't been in almost two years) and I headed off to the fitting room.

The 12s were as big as the ones at home, so I removed them and stood staring at myself in the mirror for a bit, thinking there is no way in hell those 10s are going to fit me.  However, I wasn't going home without a pair of jeans, so I grabbed them and pulled them on.

They slid up over my thighs and hips without a problem.

I buttoned them.

I zipped them.

And I could breathe.

There I was, for the first time in two years, in a pair of size 10 jeans.

I think I may have scared the little teenagers trying on their bikinis the way I shrieked and did a Snoopy happy dance all over that little dressing room in my size 10 jeans that made my ass look like a million bucks, but I didn't care.  After my celebration dance, I changed back into my clothes and headed for the check out.

My mind was racing on the drive home.  I couldn't believe that I had actually did it.  I had manged to do something that I never thought was possible again.

And then it hit me:

When I let go of the number on the scale and started making better choices about how much and when I eat (not so much what I eat-because I still love my junk food), and just trying to be more active-it all seemed less daunting.  I still haven't weighed myself and I don't care what it says-I feel better and I will no longer allow a number on a scale to define how I feel about myself.

I have stretch marks, a flabby tummy, and my hips are wider than they used to be, but it's my body and it can do amazing things without being a size 6 and weighing 120 pounds.  It wrangles a toddler, it cleans our home, it cooks meals to feed my family, and it surrounds and protects my unique heart and soul.

It doesn't matter how much we weigh or the size of our jeans or even how much flab we have on our bodies. Those things don't define you as an individual.  They never have and they never will.

You will not be remembered at the end of your life by the number on the scale or the size tag in your jeans.  Your going to be remembered by what your body protects: your heart and soul.

Perfectly Purple

The past few weeks I have been doing some closet organizing and clothes sorting/purging.  I happened to find the scarf in today's post on one of those sorting/purging binges and really wanted to show this baby off! I came up with a pretty basic outfit, but the scarf is the focal point-as it should be, IMO.

Perfectly Purple
Jeggings: Kohls (exact)
Shirt: Kohls (exact)
Cardigan: Old Navy (exact)
Shoes: Kohl's (exact
Scarf: Old Navy (not available online)

At this time of the year, you would not catch me outside in flats without socks on.  However, since I am taking photos in my house currently, I went ahead and just slipped the flats on.  (Sidenote:  I need a new pair of black flats. When the weather is right, I wear these things all. the. time. Ha!)

Also, I think I need a trim.  My hair is looking a little crazy here lately.

Lastly, a little blog business to attend to:

In the wake of organizing, sorting, and purging my clothing, I was left with very little to work with.  Anything that was too big, too small, had holes in it, etc. got moved out of the closet and my side of the dresser.  Clothes were either trashed, donated, or stored.  Once I was finished, I took a good look at the remainder of my clothes, took stock, and started making plans.

All of this was in preparation for something that is coming to the blog soon.  This change will be the first of many that will be taking place over the next couple of months.  I am asking all of you for your patience and understanding as we do some updating around here.

I will continue to post as regularly as possible and will also keep you all updated on what is going on around here.  This series could get rather interesting the next couple of weeks, so be share you are following on Facebook!

I Have a Dream (A Mother's Version)

In the spirit of today, I am going to share some of my dreams for L and her life. Since the day she was born, I have been trying to plant these little "dream seedlings" in her.  By parenting her with these dreams in mind, I hope that she eventually starts to embrace them on her own and carries them with her throughout her life.

I have a dream that L will always want to learn.  I hope she always keeps her curiosity.

I have a dream that she will always have a group of people to lean on that are outside of her family.

I have a dream that she will always have a sense of adventure.

I have dream that she will travel her own path and to the beat of her own drum.

I have a dream that she will always try to see the bigger picture.

I have a dream that she will one day hold a tiny hand in her own, with a voice that squeals, "Run, Mommy, Run!", and they do.

I have a dream that she will be confident and independent.  I hope she always knows how beautiful she is.

What are your dreams?

Operation: Get Out of Yoga Pants (Live Free)

It's (finally) that time of the week where I bring you a new outfit to feast your eyes upon!  I will be honest-I really just wanted to show you guys the new shirt I got from my sister-in-law for Christmas. Ha!  Obviously, I'm wearing more than just a shirt, but the focus is on the shirt.  Ya'll, my SIL is so good she bought me a shirt that I had been eyeing for myself.  I didn't even tell her about said shirt.  I opened it up on Christmas Eve and was like, "No way!"

Oh, yes way.

Also, let me just tell you how COLD 27 degrees with blustery wind is with a very thin shirt and leggings on!  *sigh*  I really need to figure out an indoor studio.  Anyway, so if I look a bit weird in these photos...it's because I'm COLD!

Operation: Get Out of Yoga Pants 2013 Re-Cap

What I decided to do for today was a re-cap of all the outfits I have done in 2013. I've only been doing this series since October, but I have quite a bit of outfits documented.  I like re-cap posts because they give me the ability to reflect on how far I have come and where I want to go with things in the future.

I will start the series back up after the first of the year.  Since it's the holidays, we are gearing up to be pretty busy the next two weeks, so I need to focus on all the holiday hubbub that is coming soon.  This will also give me a chance to recharge and reflect on where I want the blog to go in 2014.

I have about four to five more posts planned for the year, so make sure you pay attention to Facebook for those new post announcements!

And now I present to you.....

Week 1 || Week 2 || Week 3
Week 4 || Week 5 || Week 6

I look forward to bring you more ways to get out of yoga pants in 2014!

Operation: Get Out of Yoga Pants (Week 6)

I am BACK and ready to go with a new outfit *AND* a little something extra at the end.  I am so excited about it!  I can't wait for you all to see it!

Today's outfit is what I like to call "ballsy".  Yup!  I would have never of thought to pair these two colors together and and have it look good on me.  Well, as I was getting dressed today I thought, "Why not?!"

These were the results...

Ballsy Blue & Gold

(Don't worry, you'll see my face in a sec.)

Tee: Old Navy (exact)
Cardigan: Target (currently unavailable online)
Scarf: Kohl's (similar)
Jeggings: Kohl's (similar)
Boots: Urbanog.com (similar) **Worn, but not shown**

This outfit was fun.  I felt very peppy while wearing it-I think that may have been my confidence boosting.  I know we are in "Christmas mode" all over the place right now and these aren't traditional holiday colors, but I still love the combo.  It's so fun and happy!

I may have mentioned before that I was searching for a new winter coat.  I haven't had a new coat in about five or six years, so it was definitely time for a new one.

I managed to find the perfect one online during all the online Thanksgiving Day sales.

Wanna see it?

:)

I adore peacoats.  I adore purple.  I found the two together and it was a match made in heaven. The Hubbs says it's totally fitting. :)

Oh, and the best part of this.....

A good majority of the scarfs I own match my coat!

Especially my favorite one.

Operation: Get Out of Yoga Pants (Week 5)

So, this weeks post is a bit different.

1.  I'm not actually wearing the outfit this week.  I've been fighting a sinus infection for the past few days and my face is quite swollen.  I look a bit scary!

2.  I'm not actually wearing today's featured outfit until Sunday for our family photo session.  Since I have felt like crap all week, we haven't really gone anywhere.  Sure, I have ran to the store alone in the evenings, but that's been about the extent of my outings this week.  I just feel crummy.

So, with all of that being said, here is this weeks featured outfit!  AND A BONUS OUTFIT!
(And a promise to come back next week wearing my Thanksgiving Day outfit!)

Family Photo Day

Sweater: Kohl's (exact)
Jeggings: Kohl's (similar)
Boots: Urbanog.com (similar)

Here's the deal:  This is a super simple outfit for family photos.  I like to keep it basic-no busy prints for this girl when getting photographed!  I *may* add a red scarf.  As a matter of fact, I will more than likely add a red scarf.  L's dress is Christmas plaid, so that will go well together.

I feel my best in the jeggings and boots so that should help me feel comfortable getting my picture taken, which I can't hardly stand to do anymore.

***BONUS OUTFIT***
L's Christmas Dud's

Top: Hand-me-down
Dress: The tag says Children's Place, but it's a hand-me-down, too.
Tights: Wal-Mart (similar)
Boots: K-Mart (exact)

We love our hand-me-downs!  I have had to purchase a few things here and there for L since she has been born, but between the hand-me-downs and, what we like to call "Grandma Splurges", this kid strays pretty well outfitted.

L's outfit is a bit different this year.  The past couple of years she has worn really frilly Christmas dresses. (Think sparkles and glitter...I know, I know....but she's my little girl and she looked so cute....) Anyway, this year I wanted to do something a bit more comfortable, yet still cute.

What do you like to wear for family photos?

Dear L (Blogtember: Day 10)

Today's Prompt:

Write a public love letter to someone in your life. (It doesn't necessarily need to be romantic.)

Well, the first person that popped into my head was Lynzi, so here goes...

Dear L,

This may not be much of a love letter as love letter's go, but what is behind these words is nothing but love.

I want you to know that I will always do what I think is best and right for you. I will do my best to give you a safe and loving home.  You will never be hungry or hurting as long as I can help it, and I will go through hell to make sure of it.

I will always try to see things from your point of view.  I may not always succeed at this, so please, be patient with me.  I will be constantly learning for your entire life about being a mother.  You didn't come with instructions, much to mine and your father's dismay.

I was young once, I remember most of it, but sometimes you are going to have to be patient with me and explain things.  I want to know about your life and your likes and your happenings, but sometimes, I won't get it.  I genuinely want to know, so please, just tell me like it is.  I will do the same for you.

Life is going to hurt sometimes.  Then, other times, you will be so full of happiness that you will feel like you are going to split wide open.  Remember how that feels on the hard days.  Look to fill yourself up with happiness every day, store it, and use it to endure the bad days.

One day, a boy is going to break your heart into a million pieces.  Just come to me.  I will come with ice cream and an open set of ears.

One day, your best friend will betray you.  Ice cream fixes that, too.  As does shopping.

One day, when the car is almost out of gas, rent is due in a week, there is barely any food in the fridge, and you have a huge paper to write in two days-call me.  We'll figure it out.

I have been through a lot in my life and I used to ask myself, "Why me?"

When the nurse put you in my arms for the first time, I knew why.

It was so I could be your mother.

And that is what I will do until I can't anymore.

Love always,
Mom

Toddler Activities

The past couple of weeks it has been HOT here in the Midwest.  We saw triple digits a couple of times, and on those days, L and I stayed inside.

Of course, those were the days that L really wanted to go outside, so I was left trying to entertain a toddler who was mad at me that we couldn't go outside.

Ladies and gentlemen, I am ill-prepared when it comes to keeping my child entertained with new things to do.  We do have reading time where we curl up in her bed and we read countless books until she or both of us fall asleep. I try to bring out toys she hasn't played with in awhile, but she just gets bored after a bit and wants something else to do.  We color.  We play with stickers.  I don't have anything else in my arsenal for her to do.

So, I made a plan one evening last week that I would start gathering supplies to be able to have more things in my arsenal.  My Pinterest board, Kiddo Crafts and Activities, has a huge collection of things I could be doing with my kid.  I started going through the things that I had pinned, and I think I have come up with a pretty good arsenal of crafting, gifting, and learning things for L to do throughout the winter months.

Links are found below the photos.

I am especially excited to do number eight because L loves to high-five!  What better way to teach her colors than to have her do her favorite thing while learning her colors?  The Chicka-Chicka Boom Boom activity will be fun, too.  She loves that book!

What are some things you do to tame your toddler when it is too hot/too cold/rainy to go outside?

Praying at the Park

Source
I witnessed something yesterday and it is still bothering me today.

This happens a lot when you people watch.

Sometimes you see things that can't be unseen, no matter how hard you try.

I am going to attempt to empty my head here, but I want to preface it with the following:

Sometimes you see things that another mother does or allows to happen and you know, inside of yourself, that it is wrong.  However, because of the way you were raised and because the situation took place in public, you kept your mouth shut.  You kept your mouth shut and you prayed for the child.

*sigh*  Here goes...

Yesterday, L and I met a friend of mine and her kids at the park so our three girls could run off some energy.  This is our normal thing throughout the week (and I will cry when it gets too cold to take them to the park to play.) and my friend and I always find a table or a bench to sit on to chat and watch our girls play.  It's nice to go to a park, allow your child to go off and play, and have another mother to talk to.  It's so nice.  I love it.  I don't know how many times my sanity has been saved by just getting to go and talk to another female adult.

For the most part, our kids had the park to themselves until just before it was about time for us to leave and another set of kids and moms started showing up.  We watched the kids race to the playground and my friend leans over and says, "Look at that poor little girl.  She has to keep pulling her diaper up because it is so full it keeps falling down."  Sure enough, she,and it. was.  I'm assuming the child was still in potty training mode so that was the reason for the diaper, but this little girl would take a few steps and yank up her diaper, take a few steps, yank, etc.

We sat there and watched, in awe.  We talked about our diaper changing methods, how we change our kids before we leave the house, we don't allow the diapers to get that full, etc.  Then, suddenly, my friend goes, "Oh look!" and, that little girls diaper had finally come undone from one side, had fallen down around her ankles, and she was trying to walk.  I assume her older sibling called to their mother, "Mom, LOOK!" and her mom says something to the effect of, "Well, pick her up and bring her here."

I didn't see the rest of what happened because L was too busy trying to dig her way to China at the bottom of a slide, but my friend told me about it later in a text conversation.

That mother made that little girl sit on the bench while the rest of her siblings/other kids played.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?

There is so much I want to say right now, but I am refraining......

I am refraining because I don't know their situation.  It's not my place to judge or accuse or point fingers.  Do I think that all could have been done differently?  Yes, but I am not her mother living in the life that she is living in.

However, I was appalled, confused, and angry, and when those all happen at once, I do the only thing I know to do....

I prayed.

I prayed to God for that child right then and there and then again last night before bed.  I prayed for her and her siblings.  I prayed that, somehow, those children's needs would be met and that they would be safe and clean and healthy all their young adult lives.  I prayed that the mother was trying her hardest and that she was putting her children's needs before her own.  I asked God to give those children a better life if they weren't in a good situation.

I prayed for them because I'm a mother and  I can't stand to see children like that.

As mother's, we see things and think, "Oh hell no!  I wouldn't allow that/do that," but we don't know what goes on in other people's homes.  Part of being an adult, a human being, is having to see really bad things sometimes and we have to decide how we handle it.  That's what makes or breaks a person.  I could have offered that mother one of L's pull-ups, but something in me told me not to.  Something said, "No, don't.  That's going to do more harm than good."  Some people are prideful.  I didn't want to insult her, I just wanted to help.

I just pray that child and her siblings are going to be okay.
I pray that was a fluke.
I pray, I pray, I pray....
